Editing Work final draft

Editing Gaby and Esopam

Gabriella slammed the cubicle door shut and started to cry. She never wanted to go out of that bathroom again in the rest of her miserable life. No more hearing the words "drug addict" or "coke sniffer" said about her. She did not want to go to school ever again.

Earlier that morning, every werewolf at school had been scowling at her and looking at her weirdly. All of the people were whispering "that's the girl who was caught yesterday sniffing cocaine after hours". Gaby did not understand what they were talking about, for she was in a surfing national championship at that time. However, the bullies at school still laughed at her and insulted her when any possibility presented itself.

Confused about everyone's peculiar attitude, she went to ask her best friend Ashley what people were talking about. Ashley was just as confused as Gaby since they were together in the ocean competing for the national championship. But, she had heard that there was a rumor that she was caught sniffing cocaine after hours the day earlier.
Now, after a day of bullying and rumors, Gaby is in the bathroom cubicle unwilling to leave.
---
Gaby is in bed awake crying (you would think that werewolves do not sleep, but that is just a common mistake made from the outside world). She had just been in a fight with her parents. They think she did smoke cocaine after hours and they do not trust her anymore. Gaby reminded them that she was in the surfing championship but they still wouldn't believe her. Of all the people in the world, Gaby thought it was her parents who would understand that it was just a stupid rumor. Apparently, they didn’t. After a few hours of lying awake she gives in to sleep. In her sleep, she receives a message from the Goddess of Rumors, Esopam.

"Gabriella, you have now seen what happens to little disrespectful girls when they mess with me. It is I who has created the rumor of your drug addiction. It is I who has filled all minds on your drug addiction. It is I who has felt disrespected and dishonored for you cursing at me the last month. It is I, who in order to get revenge, has made your social life miserable. I now advise you to offer me a gift in order to negotiate a resolution to this little issue of yours. You see Gabriella; I am the only goddess who dislikes having haters and is willing to negotiate peaceful solutions to teenager social lives. I will be awaiting an answer."
---
Gaby woke up puzzled by her preposterous dream. Did Goddess Esopam visit her in her sleep? Was she really that insulted when Gaby cursed at her last month?

It happened a Sunday the month before. Ashley was suffering because a group of girls spread a rumor against her. She had cried an entire ocean because the whole school had found out and she felt embarrassed. Gaby, trying to make Ashley feel better, cursed at the Goddess Esopam and said she was unfair and stupid.

If this was why the Goddess created the rumor, Gaby would have to find a way to be forgiven.

Gaby started to think what she could offer the goddess. She already donates 100 weekly dollars to the UNICEF children’s fund, so that will not be a way out. After a lot of thinking, she finally decides what she will do. She will pray for the Goddess every day and she will offer delicious food for her. In the prayers, Gaby begs Esopam to please forgive her and to eliminate the rumors in her school, Flying Hills Middle School For Werewolves.

After a week of offerings and prayers, the Goddess visits Gaby again in her sleep. This time she says that she appreciates the prayers and offerings but that will not be enough to fulfill the bargain. She needs something else, something "that involves sacrifice".
The teenager started to think what the Goddess was referring to. Something that involves sacrifice? Did the goddess want her to kill her puppy in an offering mode to the goddess? No, definitely not that. Does the sacrifice involve her? She now knew the consequence of insulting a Goddess.

Gaby knew what the Goddess was referring to. She knew that this was for the greater good and there was no other way of saving her social life. She would have to do it.

That night Gaby went to her room to pray for Esopam. "O Goddess, I know I have insulted you and I have faced my consequence. Now, I am willing to make the sacrifice you expected of me. I am willing to swear to my own death that I will not whine, complain or insult in the rest of my short, insignificant life. Please, Goddess, accept my offerings and eliminate all rumors in Flying Hills Middle School For Werewolves."

And after that, Gabriella went to sleep.
---
The next day at school, the weirdest thing happened. Everyone was acting normally; there were neither insults nor murmurs traveling around the hallway. All the girls were wishing her well in her surfing championship. All day Gaby was waiting for a mocking tone from a bully, or an insult from a girl, even a weird look from a teacher, but nothing like this occurred.

She went home feeling happy and normal. Her parents treated her as usual, greeted her with, “what did you learn at school today, Gaby”, and life was back to normal. It was then when Gaby knew that she could never complain again for the negotiation had worked.

Gaby went to bed and the only thing she said this night was, “Thank you Goddess”.

Feedback on Novel Project

Input on Alejandro Samper's Project PUT YOUR PROJECT IN THE NOVEL SECTION
1.0-1.5
Good job! There are certain things I would recommend. The first, put the parts of speech of the words and also, for future projects, remember to put words that you really don't know. For example awkward, is a word that I am sure you knew.
2.0
Remember that Ms. Shawn will be checking that you underline the word you changed. Ex. In the word awkward, underline inconvenient.
2.5
Instead of saying that your third category is "just other words", I recommend you put something like "refering to an object or thing" (nouns) and "the description of an object" (adjective)
3.0
I really liked the introduction and how you used any way you could to do this work. I would recommend not to give a whole summary. Just enough so the person is interested or gets hooked in the story. Give recommendations. Things you like and don't like about the book, who will be interested in the story, and just the first parragraph of the story.

Step 3.0

My book "The Mysterious Object" was about glaciology: the study of glaciers. It was about a boy who lived in the foots of the Chilean Andes Mounains. This area is known for making the top quality glace. One day, he found an englacial body. Of course, the body was dead, but it had something that was really mysterious. It was a piece of paper with a phone number in it. What was strange was that, according to glaciologist Bob Smith, in the time of the man there were no cell phones.

The body was from the time that the weather was glaciating every mountain. It was very well preserved because it was frozen. However, the body emitted a horrendous pong. It was awkward putting it inside museum car because the smell was horrible. The owner of the car abused of the lemon law and demanded the car company to give him another one since the "bad smell was the car's fault".

Oscar, the boy who found the frozen man, couldnt contain his curiosity and called the number. A person in a ghetto of Jerba answered. His name was Mohammed Gupda. Mohammed listened to the story about the frozen man and almost died of a heart attack. According to a legend of his family there was a ghoul who raided the tomb of the frozen man's family.

The whole story is how Oscar goes to Jerba to find that ghoul. He and the glacialist Smith try and try to find it.  But they never do.

I would reccomend this story to anybody who is willing to read long adventure books. This is not the best book of all time but it is very entertaining. Also, you will learn many new things about Jerba's culture, Oriental mythology, South American geography and glaciers.

Novel Project Step 3.5

Ana Maria Samper

Step 1-1.5
You should have put which part of speech each word is. Everything else is great.

Step 2.0
Some of the sentences do not have the correct word use in them. Like in the second sentence, relented is used as accepted, but that is not the definiton of relented.

Step 2.5
I liked the way you organized it. However, it could have been better to do a table of some sort.

Step 3.0
Please put the title of the book in the passage. It was good that you put the words in bold. Also, I liked the way you put recommendations.

Novel. Project Step 3

I read a book about World War II. In my easy book, there were no words that I didn't understand that is why I went in the dictionary and found 25 words that I didn't understand. These words had nothing to do with my World War II book, so that is why I am going to make a review on an imaginary book with twelve of my vocabulary words.

Peer Questions and Answers

Will the school be like El Fontan?
Yes, but for elite, smart students.

How will you manage the teachers and classes?
A the student needs to have had an appointment with the teacher beforehand.

Will you somehow mix subjects?
No.

What my portfolio says about me

What my portfolio says about me

When a random person sees my portfolio, I believe they will see a multitasking person who loves to do many different things. Also, I think what he will mainly see is that I do many projects in my English class.

I hope some day my portfolio will picture me exactly as I am, but right now it doesn't since it does not have more than ten posts. Portfolios are used to show the world what you are. I want mine to do exactly that and, as a byproduct, allow some universities to see the person I am in order to allow me into their facilities. I am just an 8th grader, but now as I enter High School I have to start thinking about my future.

That is what I want people to see in my portfolio. I guarantee that in the course of my next four years I will keep on adding to that portfolio so that when I graduate some people will know exactly what person I am.

Script For School Change

Have you ever felt that you don’t want to go to your next class? That you just aren’t willing to travel to that boring math class? Well we have and we mean to change it.
Today, students feel unmotivated by the constant boredom of their routine. They feel pressured by their teachers and superiors. FreeSkedule Schools plan to change these problems.
FreeSkedule will be a school with a liberty of schedules. This means that the students will be able to manage their schedules and their curriculums according to their interests. Nevertheless, they will require a minimum amount of hours per class in order to get a full credit for the class.
In FreeSkedule schools, there is one tutor per five students, who decide what they want to learn at the time they want. They can decide what to learn, if they accomplish the minimum tasks and hours they are expected to complete for each class.
Here we have: (*blank), a student who will share with us a full day in the new school. How are you (*blank)?
Hey! Thank you for inviting me. FreeSkedule has changed my life as a student, but more important, as a learner. I can now decide when I want to learn the information required and the extra one I can decide if I want to learn it or not.

Comments on Myth

Adult

I liked the story. I enjoyed reading it. It was a bit confusing and not well presented. You should work on organized ideas, because I know what you are trying to say, but you are not saying it very well.

Pedro

Great story. It was very creative. The only thing I would uggest is to change the word smoker with sniffer and
add new expressions.

Ana

I loved your story. It was very entertaining but very confusing. I would suggest making it less confusing by changing the sentence structure and the adjectives.

Portfolio Feedback

Greg Goldemberg

I liked your portfolio so far. It is obvious that you have not finished it, but you are in a good track. Finish all of the assignments and then it will be perfect.

Siting Sources for Images

Images also have to be sited from where you got it from.
There are 3 things to have in them:
1.Person or company who originally owned it
2.Link to image
3. Kind of copyright.

5 things of our School

1) Our school will teach all the subjects normally and with exceptionally good teachers.
2) It is designed to teach people how to be responsible with time and the classes.
3) Students will require a minimum amount of classes of each subject at the end of the semester.
4) They will be expected to have arranged their classes at least 2 days earlier.
5) There will be the option of enrolling themselves in a virtual school for the advantage of not having to go to school in order to learn.

Answer Questions

What needs does the change that you want to make address?

The liberty of students, organize themselves, learn to manage their time in order to become more respectful. The concentration of students is solved since they can chose what to concentrate on because of their election.

Why would teachers, students, administrators, and parents be motivated to make this change?

STUDENTS: because they will be able to manage their schedule and decide when. Take free time when they need it.

TEACHERS: they have more motivated students, have a better class.

PARENTS: would be able to program appointments and more time for family time and after-school  enriching activities.

ADMINISTRATORS: students will want to enroll in this institute (more $$$) but only great ones will enter. This will make the school elite and an excellent one.

Portfolio Outline per Section

Sociales

In this class I learn all about the history and geography of Colombia. It is a very entertaining class since we debate some issues, learn about the modern problems and we fully understand the state in which Colombia is today. Also, it is one of the few classes that assigns projects that are fun to do and challenging.

English

In Hippie Paradise, we learn all our english material through technology. Our teacher teaches us new tech tools each class so that our virtual lives will be easier. It is one of the best classes I have since the environment is great, I learn a lot, and it is completely different than the other classes I have.

Math

I am in an advanced class with only 5 students, so this is probably the class in which I most learn. Even though we only learn through homeworks and no projects, in this class I have advanced my mathematical learning inmensly. That is why I like this class.

Social Studies

In this class I have learned about important historical civilizations such as Egypt, Mesopotamia, Macedonia, Greece, Rome, Byzantine Empire, Islam and the Medieval and Feudal Europe. We learn through a variety of projects and Power Points. I really like this class.

Science

Here we learn all about science. We learn about physics, chemistry and biology. It is a great class because we do labs and projects that are very fun to do.

What I Will Rewrite

I will rewrite my middle school myth that I did at the beginning of the year simply because I want to see my progress in writing throughout the whole year. Also, I will like to edit that piece of work because, frankly, I believe it's not the best.

I will do it by adding new ideas, vocabulary and details that could enrich the work. This will show my learning throughout the year.

My Passion

My passion

When people ask me what my passion is, I don't know what to tell them. Of course I like many things, but I don't think they are my passions. A passion is something you never get tired of doing. Something that you need to find as you grow up. In my case, I haven't found what my passion is yet. You could say that I am "shopping for a passion".

I will tell you about the things I like. I live to do sports, especially volleyball and tennis, I adore playing video games such as Fifa 12,and I like to spend time with my friends and family.

In this portfolio you will experience my works in school and my expedition to finding my passion.

Obstacles for My School

The main obstacles I see in our new school are the following:

  • The student-teacher coordination will be tricky. Even if the student arranges the class beforehand, the teacher might not always be available 24/7 and that will limit the liberty of the "free schedule".
  • If, somehow, a class is not taken into consideration, a whole period of a day will be lost and the student will have to work after hours or in the weekends to solve that problem.
  • Irresponsible students will not have any classes planned for the day and, therefore, the whole purpose of responsibility and free schetules will be lost.
  • If a teacher is not available a day, the classes he/she programmed will be cancelled.

3 Best Works of the Year

The first important project of the year was the Little Bird Tales in English. It consisted of writing a myth about a school problem and then post it in Little Bird Tales. This was a great project because it was one of the first assignments that required a Web 2.0 tool. I think this fact is what motivated me to do better. I was tired of pencils and paper so I was eager to use technology to show my show my work.

The next one was a Social Studies project in which we had to create Angient Roman baseball cards and some paragraphs describing which one is better. I think this was the best Social Studies project because it was the time I discovered the potencial of my iTouch. I did all this in Keynote for iPod Touch. What gave me motivation was the topic: Ancient Rome. Since I am very interested in this empire, I added a little more effort to the assignment.

The most recent major project I've had is a Spanish-Computers FIFA 12 proyect. I had to use a great variety of programs in order to complete that proyect. It was the best proyect because I mastered my use many important programs such as Adobe premiere Elements, iMovie, Excel. etc.  Also, I was greatly motivated by the fact that is was about FIFA 12, my favorite video game.

My School

Issue: modern day schools follow a year long routine which can be boring.

Audience: the new school's comunity

For our school change, we decided to change the fact that schools circle around routines.
We work in 8 periods, and I believe that should change. Our proposal is that at the end of each month, every student needs to have completed x amout of hours/ classes for each subject. It can be 4 Social Studies classes in one day, or it can be one class per week. It all depends on the student's decision. Also, the administration of the school will measure in some way or other the happyness of the students. That does not mean that we need day-long reecesses but that does mean that the teacher is not boring, mean, or agressive.

How schools are killing creativity

1: kindergardeners are very divergent thinkers.
2: the schools follow a factory model.
3: collaboration is great for learning.
4: ADHD has increased a lot lately.

Myself as a learner throughout the year.

At the beginning of the year, I was used to learning from a textbook, board and desk. It was a good way to learn, but not exactly the best. This year in English class, through the technology tools and the amazing learning environment in Hippie Heaven, I have discovered that learning can happen in every shape and color. For example, the fact that we have to show our knowledge through songs, videos, and many other Web 2.0 tools has helped me find new ways of showing my work than just doing my homework.

One great advantage of this type of learning is the use of the Internet. This year I have learned so many ways of using the Internet that I'm confident that I know more about it than most adults. I have to present my work through a blog, and this was a crazy idea three years ago. This only shows our ability of progress. If in three years I can move from worksheets to blogs, imagine what changes will occur in the next 10 years.

I have learned a lot this year in English and I think it's due to the WAY of learning and not the material. I hope that in the next few years we will continue to learn in this method and not the regular, old and ordinary ways of the past.

A Midsummer's Night Dream: Creating

A Midschool's Nights Dream skit

Andrew: I hate Mrs. Smith! She made us make a Midsummer's Night Dream play, by
such person called Liam Shespeare.

Rick: Its not that bad, at least I get a kiss from Beth!

Andrew: She won't kiss you! She's my girlfriend!

Rick: As things are going right now, she won't be for long, I, the swaggy Lysander shall
kiss my dear Hermia.

Andrew: Her love does not correspond you, so stay out of it PUNK!

Teacher: Ok kids, so you know your roles, right?

Rick: Yes, I'll be Lysander, (smirk), Andrew will be Demetrius, Beth will be Hermia, and
Abby will be Helena.

Andrew (under his breath): I hate you!

Teacher: And don't forget to make a dramatic end! (puckers lips)

Beth: I'm not confident about kissing Rick, I don't know if it's fair with Andrew...

Aby: I wish I could kiss Rick, (sigh).

Beth: If only Rick liked you in stead of liking me.

Aby: everybody likes you an I'm forever alone. (gulp)

(Beth pats her back)

In the play...

Beth: O sweet Lysander...

Rick: My beautiful Hermia...

Beth: I love thee

Rick: No, I love thee more than what thee loves me
Beth: Ohh, and the moon so bright, so perfect for a true love's sight.

Rick: Never hath the moon shone so bright as my heart for thee, fair Hermia...(reaches
in to kiss Beth)

(Beth moves away)
Rick: I shall kiss you anyway
(Lysander grabs her and kisses her)
(Beth quickly moves away staggering)

Andrew: you stupid pinhead... How dare you?!
(Pushes Rick)

Rick: iiiit wwaasss ppparrt of theeee plaaaay (backing away)

Andrew (infuriated): It was clear she didn't want to do it, you moron!

Rick: I don't care... I just kissed your girlfriend. (sneers and smirks)

Andrew: then I shall bury my fists bosom unto thy ugly face!
(Punches in head)

Narrator: A week later Rick falls in love for Abby when she gives him a delicious

cupcake. So this is the story of Liam Shepeare's a Midschool Night's Dream.

Evaluating for both Rubrics

MARIA POMBO
Maria, I love your way of briefly and shortly describing Romeo And Juliet. In a short passage, you succesfully managed to give sufficient details to fully understand Shakespeare's play. Very good job.

CAMILA TORO
Camila, I was impressed by your ability to compare two authors in a very descriptive and complete way. I also liked your author choice. Dr. Seuss and Shakespeare, as you said, were very important for the history of writing and that is why it thought that you made an excellent decision by choosing to compare these two great authors.

ANDRES SILVA
Andres. I liked the way you compared Romeo and Juliet to Midsummer's Night Dream. I especially liked the way you used a graph to visually represent your ideas. I would like to suggest one thing. In your blog, please put a font that is easy and fun to read. Although the font you are using is very elegant, it is very complicated to read. So please change it in order to facilitate the readers's lives. Thank you and great job.

Who Was Shakespeare? Knowing and Understanding

KNOWING:
I watched a video on youtube titled Shakespeare: Brief and Naughty as our Knowing step.

UNDERSTANDING:
Here are the notes I did while watching the video.

Considered the best author who ever lived.
Wrote perverse jokes.
Born in 1564. parents John Shakespeare and Mary Arden
Lived in Stratford upon Avon until age 13.
1582 married Anne Hathaway.
Had Susana, Hamlet and Judeth children.
1591 moved to London age 21.
Wrote 37 plays and 154 sonnets.
Shakespeare lived during the Elizabethan Era.
A lot of disease so the playhouses were shut down.
1611 Shakespeare translated Bible to English for King James I. Psalms.
People were executed publicly and their heads were put in poles.
No sanitation so dirty rivers.
Queen Elizabeth was friends with Shakespeare and inspired some plays.
Theaters were in low class neighborhoods.
Shakespeare had a lot of mistresses in brothels.
All actors were men! Even Juliet.

His work was divided into Histories, Comedies and Tragedies.

Histories was only based on English monarchy.
Comedies have happy endings.
Tragedies sad endings. Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, Julius Caesar. Etc.

Bungee Jackets Final Description

Contact an Expert by Jack Akerman
Hey Scott, (or Mr. Westerfeld)

Our English teacher assigned us a project on your great book, Uglies, and I even read the whole quartet after finishing this one. The project is about Bungee Jackets and how they work. We figured out that there must be a superconductor grid below the city, so that the bungee jacket is able to function. This superconductor must be cooled in someway or another for it to constantly work. We also believe that there is an electromagnet in the jacket that activates with the body heat of the person using it. An electromagnet is a magnet with a temporary pull/push since it only works with a power source. Also, there has to be a certain type of sensors in buildings, and other surroundings, that are elevated at 2 meters above the ground and these determine if the person wearing the bungee jacket is at the certain height and speed as to be able to open the jacket by pressing a button on his/her left shoulder. Then, the jacket is opened and the person is released. Of course, physically speaking, the jacket wold shoot into the air, never to be seen again. That's why we believe there needs to be a thermal sensor, for the jacket needs to deactivate as soon as the person is released. The reason why we are writing to you is that we would like to ask you how you initially imagined the Bungee Jackets, how they work, and some things you never thought about.

Thank you,

Jack, Maria, Daniel, Alejandro, and Lorenzo.

APA FACTS by Maria Pombo
According to the information gathered by my group, we were able to develop a theory with several facts we found.
We researched many different subjects which include motion, thermal, and height sensors, as well as magnetic levitation and a superconductor magnetic field. All to figure out a teory on how bungee jackets would work.  We figured that the jacket must posses a thermal sensor (which could also be a height sensor in its surroundings) that enables the wearer to deactivate the electromagnet in the jacket.
The electromagnet works with an electric current that activates the magnet (Brain/Looper, March 12/2012). We believe that the trigger of the electric current is the heat sensor equipped in the jacket. About magnetic levitation we found out several things. For once, there needs to be something balancing the jacket at opposite extremes for it to float and not turn itself and crash into the ground. These are probably small weights that help the jacket balance itself. (Wikipedia, March 12/2012). Maglev is a way of elevating an object from the floor using magnetic repelling. Magnetic Levitation is used for Maglev trains. These are a safe way to travel at fast speed no matter the climate. Magnets in the floor repel with magnets in the train allowing it to float. This system is really safe and some types of collisions are impossible.(Mary Bellis, March12/2012) Nowadays, magnetic levitation is used in several aspects, such as maglev trains (which are currently developing), cargo, magnetic bearings, and product daily purposes. Magnetic Levitated trains, or maglevs, use electromagnets to levitate, since the push or pull is temporary and a constant force would completely stop the train.
A sensor is what converts energy for something to detect. Sensors are used very commonly every day. A sensor is what reacts to a signal. The sensor’s quality depends on its sensitivity. (Wikipedia, March 12/2012)
There are 3 types of motion sensors. Motion sensors function with light sensors and when a person blocks that light line, the sensor activates whatever it is supposed to activate. There are others that make the light bounce against the person and detect this, and again activate a sound, a light, or in this case, deactivate a magnetic field (Harris, T., March 12/2012). Sensors can be both passive and active. Passive measure changes in patters and active measure infra-red waves.(Gabriel Gache, May 7/2012).
An electromagnet can be made at home, by wrapping a copper wire around a piece of metal and turning the field on, be it a battery or an electric current. (Brain/Looper, March 12/2012)
We also confirmed that all magnets are bipolar, they contain a North and South pole. North and South attract each other, while the same pole repel themselves. (Brain/Looper, March 12/2012). We also found information on superconductors and how these create a magnetic field. Small magnets are repelled because mirror pole effect, which involves the reflection of the poles to levitate and object. (Nave, March 12/2012). Returning to superconductors, magnetic fields are centered at a superconductor, since it is from here where the magnetic field sprouts. (Brain/Looper, March 12/2012)
Nowadays, magnetic levitation is used in several aspects, such as maglev trains (which are currently developing), cargo, magnetic bearings, and product daily purposes. Magnetic Levitated trains, or maglevs, use electromagnets to levitate, since the push or pull is temporary and a constant force would completely stop the train.

In the Uglies Project, I had to describe the product (step 4). Here is the final draft of my part:

4. Object description

A bungee jacket is like a lightweight suit that covers your torso, arms and legs until the knee. A famous resemblance of this suit comes from the movie Mission Impossible 4, in the part of the Indian Mansion. This suit is made of electromagnet plates (plates of aluminum-titanium alloy for maximum magnetic repulsion) that will be covered in soft pads so the passenger is comfortable. The suit weighs about 4 kg. It is not the lightest suit, however its heaviness comes from the metals that conform the magnets. They will have a chip that sends signals regularly to an external sensor, which is positioned in the walls of every building. The sensor is responsible for the triggering of the suit.

The technology works through magnetic levitation. A superconducter is placed underground, which will be responsible for the magnetic levitation. The superconducter is a metal that needs to be at an extremely low temperature. The low temperature makes the difference between a simple conducter and a superconducter. The second one is more powerful, which guarantees safety to the passenger.

To trigger the electromagnets in the suit, two sensors are placed in the building. They are designed to calculate the amound of kinetic energy the passenger has from the fall and when to trigger the magnets for the passenger to be safe and secure. The sensors will also control the electromagnets in the suit so that the passenger can be able to get off it and not remain levitated all the time.

A special thing that the suit has is that one size fits all. The material used to make the jacket is so flexible, that it can fit from a fetus to the most obese person in the world. It is somewhat like the suit used by Helen Parr (Elastigirl in the Ingredibles). It has the nessessary technology to be comfortable for all the consumers.

Novel Project Step 2.5

I read the book Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart. Something challenging I found while searching for the best theme was the complexity of the book. Lee Stewart gives lots of themes in this extense novel and it is a hard task to find the most appropriate. At the beginning I thought it would be assossiated with change, and how it is not always good. My reasoning for choosing this theme comes when I discovered that Mr. Curtain was trying to change the minds of all people and to do an evil act. Then I abolished the theme because I remembered that change is not the main theme in the story. It is important, but not as important as other themes in the story.
The best one I thought had to be about great minds and young talent, because Reynard Muldoon was a very gifted teenager with a great mind. Then, when he meets Constance, Kate, and Sticky, other young people with brilliand minds and talents, I thought that was the best theme in the story. Afterward, when I met with my partner Mateo Osorio, I decided that his theme was better. That explanation is in spet 3 of the novel project.

Novel Project Step 4

Prezi Presentation by Alejandro Samper and Mateo Osorio

March 12, 2012

Novel Project Q3 Step 3

I got together with my partner Mateo Osorio and we discussed, in a very in depth discussion, the possible themes in the book The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart. After a very long and intense discussion, we both agreed that Mateo's theme was the most complete and appropriate in this case. Mine was that "change can't always be good", but Mateo's was better: "all members of a group must participate and be valued as equals for the group to prevail". We decided that the second one was better because change doesn't really happen in the book. However, the second theme is better because it shows a true concept in the story which is teamwork. Without teamwork, the Mysterious Benedict Society would have failed their mission in Nomasan Island in the Learning Institute for the Very Enlightened. Although all the team members were tired of Constance, she turned out to be the seed for the success of the mission.

Working in Groups

Working in groups

When you work in groups, you use more then just one brain. This helps build knowledge in a way that every group member gives some new facts, theories, questions and information. There are many advantages that group working gives. Sometimes when working in groups, you think of things that you wouldn't have though of by working individually.

Working on the Uglies group project, we worked faster and more efficiently than working individually. We could split up the work and subjects, which would eventually lead to a faster and better understanding of the bungee jackets. Every group member gave new information and the final product was better than any o us could imagine.

Working in groups is also a lot of fun. We work, but we also have our laughs and jokes. You also get less stressed than you usually do when working alone. Working alone makes you work five times more than working in groups, and that will increase stress levels. You also learn how well others work. If a group member does not do their equal share of work, then you will know never again to pick him/her as group partners.

DANIEL MORENO:
I was really interested in your way of describing real learning. I agree with you in all of the things you said. About your transitional words and phrases, I liked the way you used complex phrases correctly. I was especially drawn to the phrase “in my perspective”. Great Job.

JACK AKERMAN
Your use of transitional phrases was exemplar. However, you used some of the most common ones. Also, we were required to put at least three transitional words or phrases. Nontheless, your post was entertaining and well written. Good job.

ANA MARIA SAMPER
I liked the way you made the analogy from sponge and water. However, I did not see any transitional words in the post, which was the task. You write really well and you proved your point. I liked it.

CAMILA TORO
I loved your extense post and especially your use of transitional phrases. You put lots of transitional phrases and all in a correct context. I congratulate you for your awesome grammar. Great job.

Real Learning

Real learning is to learn in a way so good, that you will never forget what you learn. For example, real learning is not academic. You may learn the world's countries and capitals, but in two months you will forget them. Real learning is spiritual, like lessons. If you learn something the bad way, you will probably remember it for the rest of your life. However,  if you learn something in class that you only need for the exam, you will remember it for a really short time.
I also think real learning occurs when the person is willing to learn. For example: in the movie The Million Dollar Baby, Maggie Fitzgerald wanted to train boxing so hard, that she became lightweight champion in 1 and a half years, compared to the average 4 years.

Bungee Jacket Article

In this page, you can read an article that has to do with Uglies.
BUNGEE CORD
A bungee cord (sometimes spelled bungie), also known as a shock cord, is an elastic cord composed of one or more elastic strands forming a core, usually covered in a woven cotton or polypropylene sheath. The sheath does not materially extend elastically, but it is braided with its strands spiraling around the core so that a longitudinal pull causes it to squeeze the core, transmitting the core's elastic compression to the longitudinal extension of the sheath and cord. Specialized bungees, such as some used in bungee jumping, may be made entirely of elastic strands.
Bungee cords have been used to provide a lightweight suspension for aircraft undercarriages from before World War I, and are still used on many small homebuilt aircraft where weight remains critical.[1] Bungee cords were also used in parachuting to assist in opening the old-style parachute container after theripcord was pulled.
Today, bungee cords are most often used to secure objects without tying knots and to absorb shock. Inexpensive bungee cords, with metal or plastic hooks on each end, are marketed as a general utility item. This form is also known as octopus, or "occy", straps in Australia, these can be an individually, or a set of four hooked straps held together by a metal ring allowing the occy strap to secure items around various tie points, for example a suitcase to a car roof rack. Extensions of the concept are available as a coarse net of bungee cords with metal or plastic hooks around the periphery, for securing irregularly shaped loads of luggage and cargo on the backs of pickup trucks, roofs of cars, and so on.
The origin of the name "bungee", "bu" is uncertain. The Oxford English Dictionary records the use in 1938 of the phrase bungee-launching ofgliders using an elasticized cord.[2]

Grammar Rules

Notes on Capitalization and Punctuation

Capitalization

Capitalize points of the compass only when they refer to specific regions.

Examples:
My brother lives in the Upper East side of Manhattan. 👍
Go north three blocks to find the pizza restaurant. 👎

Punctuation

To show plural possession, make the noun plural first. Then immediately use the apostrophe.

Example:
The boys' shoes are Nike. 👍
The boys's room was messy.👎

Never use an apostrophe with possessive pronouns: his, hers, its, theirs, ours, yours, whose. They already show possession so they do not require an apostrophe.

Example
The gang stole their neighborhood's bank.👍
The the hat is your's not her's. 👎

The en dash (-) is used to describe a time period.

Examples
The war went from 2015-2020.👍
The-car was fast. 👎

How to find themes

Literary work's primary
Central idea of a work of literature/ moral, message, meaning
NOT A SUBJECT!
It isn't a thing, it's the meaning of the thing
Love is not a theme, what about love?
star wars: subjects. Good, evil, wars
Themes, good will conquer evil.
THEME IS OPINION ON A SUBJECT
Literature is a model of the real world
The author shows you the world in her eyes
Humans are able to interpret models into the real world
Chimps cannot
The validness of a theme is to get supporting evidence from the text. If you don't, it's not considered a well written theme
Theme can be the meaning. For example, if he character changes for the good, the theme may be to follow his path in your own life
To Find Theme:
A) look for changes in the main character
B) watch for clear statements of a theme
C) Title can give some clues on the main theme
D) Look at the conflict.
Theme is bigger than just the character or just the story
Debatable opinion about a subject
Main themes

Star Wars Article Summary 2

BLASTERS

They were very important in the movie because they were the most abundant weapon in the wars. Light blasters and light sabors were the two most seen weapons in Star Wars.
Bullets of Light?
The bullets in the movies appear to be light beams. In an interview with Gerald Wilson, he explains that, if the weapon was true, it would be creating photons and sending them to any desired target. Photon particles are the lights you see. In labs, there have been prototypes of things being destructed by lasers.
Blasting Ships
In another interview with a person called DeYoung, he/she describes that, if humans had the capacity to have laser cannons in aircrafts, it would be amazing because lasers have almost unlimited ammo. People are working on how to generate and store the ammo in the ships, and that it is in 10-20 years that the first prototypes are going to be found. I think this is a very bad idea because humans are working on world peace, and that will destroy us.
Cybernetic Arms and Legs
The technology used to shape Luke Skywalker back together and the technology in Darth Vader can be seen today in artificial limbs. The main key in these limbs is to detect pressure and temperature. For example, they should be able to identify the temperature in a cup of coffee and the pressure needed to hold it and not drop it nor destroy it. There are also artificial limbs that are designed to be the user's skin color. That will make it less weird.
Star Wars Episode III
The Force is in war and Anakin Skywalker is the traitor whose hunger for power makes him turn to the dark side and lose the war. He is now named Darth Vader. Yoda and Obi Uan Kenobi have to retreat and hide. Anakin gives birth to twins, also in secret.

Star Wars Article Summary

I chose to read this Star Wars Article about things that were unreal in the Star Wars Saga. It had several important subtitles:

Gravity

The death star had to have artificial gravity for it to work. The article author, Lee Roop, interviewed some of NASA's architects and they explained that there needed to be rotation and acceleration for there to be artificial gravity in the Death Star because it was way too small to have Earth-like gravity. One scientist offered to make the death star inside a balloon so that there would be pressure and an atmosphere. Another proposed to make the Death Star turn around its axis to make artificial gravity.

They also said that the Death Star was inspired by one of Saturn's moons: Mimas. It has a crater like the laser weapon in the Death Star and it is also gray.

Princess Leia's Slave Outfit

It tells the story of the outfit. Its designer, Aggie Guerard, said it was actually two costumes, a metal one for the "calm scenes", and a rubber one used for comfortableness in the "action parts".
Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) posted on her website that the outfit “had the tendency to make my now not-so-private privates quite public. Especially for the actor standing behind Jabba, playing Boba Fett [Jeremy Bullock]. From where Boba stood, so straight and tall and severe behind his mask — to put it simply and weirdly, Jeremy could see beyond my yawning, plastic bikini bottoms all the way to Florida.”- Carrie Fisher

Return of the Jedi Stats

This part of the article described the success of the movie. It said that in the first weekend, it won 23 million dollars, in total it won 309.2 million dollars and it was nominated for the Academy Awards but did not win any.
