Grammar Rules

Notes on Capitalization and Punctuation

Capitalization

Capitalize points of the compass only when they refer to specific regions.

Examples:
My brother lives in the Upper East side of Manhattan. 👍
Go north three blocks to find the pizza restaurant. 👎

Punctuation

To show plural possession, make the noun plural first. Then immediately use the apostrophe.

Example:
The boys' shoes are Nike. 👍
The boys's room was messy.👎

Never use an apostrophe with possessive pronouns: his, hers, its, theirs, ours, yours, whose. They already show possession so they do not require an apostrophe.

Example
The gang stole their neighborhood's bank.👍
The the hat is your's not her's. 👎

The en dash (-) is used to describe a time period.

Examples
The war went from 2015-2020.👍
The-car was fast. 👎
