How to find themes
Literary work's primary
Central idea of a work of literature/ moral, message, meaning
NOT A SUBJECT!
It isn't a thing, it's the meaning of the thing
Love is not a theme, what about love?
star wars: subjects. Good, evil, wars
Themes, good will conquer evil.
THEME IS OPINION ON A SUBJECT
Literature is a model of the real world
The author shows you the world in her eyes
Humans are able to interpret models into the real world
Chimps cannot
The validness of a theme is to get supporting evidence from the text. If you don't, it's not considered a well written theme
Theme can be the meaning. For example, if he character changes for the good, the theme may be to follow his path in your own life
To Find Theme:
A) look for changes in the main character
B) watch for clear statements of a theme
C) Title can give some clues on the main theme
D) Look at the conflict.
Theme is bigger than just the character or just the story
